Certain issuers have different policies, and not all cards from an issuer may offer benefits or the same benefits. Here are some of the most popular credit cards that offer lost luggage insurance benefits and the coverage they provide.
American Express
These are some of the American Express cards that come with lost luggage insurance¹ (you must pay with your Amex card or with Membership Reward® points to get coverage):
Each of these cards covers the cardholder, spouse or partner and children under the age of 23. Checked baggage is covered up to $500 per person, and carry-on baggage is covered up to $1,250 per person. High-risk items, which include things like jewelry, sporting equipment, electronics, computers, wearable technology, items made of gold, silver or platinum and furs, are covered only up to $250.
Both The Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) and the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) come with increased coverage²—up to $2,000 for checked baggage and a combined maximum of $3,000 for both checked and carry-on baggage per person per covered trip.
Bank of America
Credit cards such as the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite credit card* and the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card offer coverage for your luggage and its contents if they’re lost or stolen because of theft or mishandling by the common carrier, like an airline, bus, train or cruise ship.
Chase
A few Chase credit cards offer some of the highest lost luggage coverage available through a credit card. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offer reimbursement for the difference between the actual value and any reimbursement from the common carrier needed to repair or place your checked or carry-on baggage or its contents. Your checked baggage and carry-on baggage each have a maximum benefit of up to $3,000 per covered person (cardholders and immediate family members), and each includes a sublimit of up to $500 for cameras/electronic equipment and another $500 sublimit for jewelry and watches.
The Chase Freedom and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card have the same coverage limits as the Sapphire cards, except they only cover a combined total of $500 for electronics and jewelry/watches.
Additional Chase credit cards also offer $3,000 worth of lost luggage coverage, including:
Finally, the issuer’s co-branded United Airlines cards all feature lost luggage insurance:
The card’s benefits state that both the cardholder and the immediate family members can claim up to $3,000 if your checked or carry-on luggage is damaged or lost by the carrier.
Capital One
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) offers reimbursement for the differences between the value of the amount claimed and the common carrier’s payment up to $3,000 per trip.
Citi
Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®* offers lost baggage insurance.
Other Issuers
Popular travel rewards cards from issuers like Barclays, Wells Fargo and Discover don’t explicitly come with lost luggage insurance. However, if your card is a Visa Signature or Visa Infinite card, you may be covered, so make sure to check your benefits guide.
Visa Signature and Visa Infinite
Some Visa Signature and Visa Infinite cards will reimburse you, your spouse and dependent children under the age of 23 for lost checked baggage. However, this benefit may not be available with every card, so if you know you want lost luggage insurance, check with your issuer or open a card that explicitly states it offers this benefit.
